| Jane Sanderson has consistently volunteered at Open Door Youth Shelter since
it opened in 1992. She has traveled from Northbrook to volunteer at Open Door
twice a month. This is approximately 624 hours a year, and nearly 8,000 hours
over her 12 plus years at Open Door. Jane’s dedication is both a model
to the residents and the staff alike. |
Jane first learned about The Night Ministry through her pastor at Glenview
Community Church, UCC. She started the volunteer training with then Volunteer
Coordinator, Lisa Simone-Bascunan. That training has stayed with her through
the years. But this volunteer also brings with her a depth of experience as
a registered nurse and as a mother of five and grandmother of 13.
Over the years, residents and staff came and went, but Jane remained. Her
compassion for the youth who make Open Door their home is evident. She lends
an ear to those who want to talk. She cares for the kids, and, especially their
babies. She cares for the staff too. Jane now does everything from organizing
the kitchen to helping residents with life skills such as cooking and cleaning.
As a registered nurse, she helps the staff with the resident’s medications.
By example, she demonstrates healthy adult habits and behavior. Jane has the
respect of everyone at The Night Ministry.
