| Mory Sanberg, a high school student at Francis Parker, became involved
with The Night Ministry as a way to fulfill her community service hours requirement
at
school. In the beginning, Mory made 100 sack suppers by herself for distribution
at Beat the Heat, The Night Ministry’s summer youth outreach program on
the streets of Lakeview. The second summer, she increased the number of sack
suppers and had a small core of 3-4 kids helping her fairly regularly. The third
summer, she made 150-175 sack suppers each week and got 8-10 kids involved weekly.
Mory also became heavily involved in providing holiday stockings for distribution
at The Night Ministry Holiday Celebration. She learned fundraising—raising
funds in the thousands of dollars each year. She made purchasing decisions
and recruited other volunteers for putting the stockings together. In three
years, she made over 1,000 stockings and baby bags for distribution. The project
cycle was year round and required a lot of time, effort, and commitment.
Seeing the difference she made in her community by passing out the holiday
stockings she had created, gave her a real passion for what she was doing.
