| Elvina Moen first volunteered with a group from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church
as part of a direct service project. That experience compelled her to begin volunteering
as part of the hospitality crew with The Night Ministry's Health Outreach Bus
in September 1999.
Once a week, all year long, Elvina serves beverages to bus visitors. Start
to finish she takes care of the coffee, making each visitor’s coffee
the way they like it. Elvina graciously serves our bus visitors with kindness
and consideration; making each person feel cared for. She’s very sympathetic
and compassionate with people facing difficult circumstances. Elvina wants
to let them know she cares and is interested in what’s going on in their
life.
At age 86, Elvina, is The Night Ministry’s most senior volunteer. But
her young spirit and lively personality serve as an inspiration to staff, volunteers,
and the people she meets on Chicago’s nighttime streets. Elvina’s
positive attitude, generous spirit, and consistent community involvement are
remarkable. No matter the weather, 15 below or 95 degrees, she shows up – reaching
out to those in need.
