| Dave, Patti, and Teresa Melzer believe that serving soup and bread is just the
start of social justice. For the Melzer family, raising awareness in their St.
Viator Parish community about homelessness and poverty and ways to improve the
situation is something that goes hand in hand with their direct service work.
Adult and teen members of the parish began asking how they could get involved
and help. Teresa began doing drives for food and hygiene kit items at her high
school. And, as Patti put it, "it started to snowball." This has
led to an intergenerational effort of young people and adults who partner to
help the disadvantaged of Chicago through The Night Ministry.
