In 1976, concern about the impact of loneliness, despair, substance abuse, and
homelessness on people prompted 18 congregations of diverse faiths to found The
Night Ministry – originally known as The Northside Ecumenical Night Ministry.
They hired one employee, Tom Behrens. His job? Outreach on the nighttime streets
of Lakeview and Lincoln Park.
Tom Behrens developed our programs from what we learned about the life circumstances
and needs of the people we were serving.
With Tom’s guidance, The Night Ministry emerged from being a one-man
operation touching hundreds of lives, to an organization that helps thousands
of youth and adults each year .
